In 1997 Duesseldorf, the home of electronic music in Germany, birthplace of Kraftwerk, Der Plan and Mouse On Mars, witnessed the birth of yet another remarkable act. Philipp Maiburg was a the Drum & Bass DJ hosting the popular Wednesday Breaks in the Unique Club when he met Michael Scheibenreiter, the producer working in the legendary Atatak Studios, and it didn't take long until the duo founded the Phoneheads. Their first 12" single, 'Garlick/Bassball' came out in the same year on INFRACom! and was immediately blessed with excellent reviews by the club press such as Groove and DE:BUG. Philipp Maiburg became one of the first German Drum & Bass DJs to be invited repeatedly into the legendary London 'Blue Note Caf?'. In October 1998, their third 12", 'Syrinx/Noi?', was released on INFRACom and hit the German club Charts only a week later at number 9 and remained listed for 8 weeks. The video clip for the 12" became the first German D&B video clip to remain in rotation on VIVA 2 for 4 weeks. The Phoneheads climbed to number 2 in the MTV dance charts.
1999 Phoneheads released their first and extremely successful album 'Peak Position', the release followed by a nearly non stop European tour, playing forty clubs in 12 months. No less popular as DJs, they accompanied the top British act EZ Rollers on their European tour in the same year.
2000 the second album, also highly musical, 'Second Sight' was released and succeeded in earning the Phoneheads both recognition and an enthusiastic response in the British club press. They were invited to festivals with international reputation like SonneMondSterne, Nature One, Electronic Beats, Snowzone, Popkomm, Introducing, Juicy Beats or Bizarre, presenting the typical ?Phoneheads sound?: drum&bass, unmistakably fuelled by the musical influences of funk, reggae and pop.
In 2005 the Phoneheads released their new long player "Buddy Language" on their own label Buddy records.
In 2007 Phoneheads return on INFRACom! with "Live At Tonhalle" the new album performed live together with the Duesseldorf Symphonic Orchestra, a band assembled exclusively for this event and singer Cleveland Watkiss from London. The CD release is supplemented with a DVD including a video of the complete concert, bonus material and videoclips.
